Mother Hubbard Found Something The economic news continues to be good, in its own frustratingly slow and moderate way. The economy grew at a 2.8 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter, partly because people bought cars again and partly because businesses finally restocked “Old Mother Hubbard’s cupboards”. Growth like this; around 3 percent, is likely to be with us for the next couple years. For sure nothing to get excited about however this progress will eventually get the job done. This does however give little relief to the large numbers of people who still can’t find solid employment. The unemployment rate fell again, to 8.3 percent, and job growth increased again to 1.5 percent. Especially encouraging is that manufacturing jobs were up 2 percent. The resurrection of the manufacturing sector is a surprise development in the last couple years, after a decade of jobs being sent overseas. Most of those jobs that are best done in low-wage countries have already left for cheaper climates, but the ones that have stayed here are here for good reasons. We‘re lucky this refining fire process finally has shown signs of ending. Jobs in business services were up almost 4 percent, a combination of higher-paid technical jobs and lower paid temporary jobs. And in the large health care sector, jobs (predominately lower paid ones) were up 2 percent. The biggest drag on the economy in the past year has been the elimination of 300,000 government jobs, about half of them in education. I will follow up next month with what all of this might mean for the real estate industry. SEEKING EQUILIBRIUM When stocks go down sharply, they often sink well below their intrinsic value, which means they’ll rebound to at least that level. The same thing happens with home prices, only much slower. Real estate has a “watermark” let’s call it that historically values float around the cost to build (Sticks and Bricks).
